This is one of a series of pages
which I have uploaded to illustrate facets of steam rallies we have
attended in the UK. Such events occur all over the country in the
summer months, they are easily found by using your favourite search
engine and may have anything between a handful of steam engines and
hundreds (as at the Great Dorset Steam Fair which could probably be
fairly described as having an excess of riches). Click here for the overall
2018 index.
On the last Saturday of April each year, the good people of
Camborne come together to have a giant street party to celebrate the town's most
famous son, Richard Trevithick. Naturally steam engines are the centre piece and
after being on show during the day, they parade round the town in the afternoon.
As usual, the camera lies, there
were at least as many cloudy moments as sunny ones and together with the
large crowds, this made photography a little challenging. The vast
majority of the engines recorded as can be deduced from the links are
based in Cornwall.
We had a wonderful time ambling around soaking up the
atmosphere with musicians, dancers and singers all over the place, competing to
be more 'Cornish' than the others. The organisers did a wonderful job to bring
it all together, while I was naturally disappointed at the amount of litter as
the crowds melted away at the end of the day, by 09.00 the next morning the
streets had been swept clean - it was a task that would have had to be done anyway
and probably cheaper than bringing in more waste receptacles specially.
