Yorkshire Traction Engine Rally (1st - 2nd September 2018)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2018 introduction and overall index.

The Yorkshire Traction Engine Rally was essentially the former Harewood Steam Fair transplanted to a new, but similar venue at Scampston Hall between Malton and Scarborough. While it seems to have been the first steam rally there, the organisers had put on a 'Game and Country Fair' here earlier in the year and we have visited their successful events at Whitby, Ashley Hall, Astle Park, Warringnton and Whitby. They run a plain vanilla family experience and seem to have mastered the tricky knack of being professionals working with amateurs, without giving anyone the feeling that they are being exploited.

In the last three years, I have been to rallies in Yorkshire at Helmsley, Masham, Driffield, Whitby and Harewood and there can't be many engines left in the area 'in ticket' which I haven't seen. We enjoy our trips 'up north' but it seems that we shall now have to wait a while for a degree of 'engine churn' before we go again because it's a long way from home.
