Woodcote Steam Rally (12th - 13th July, 2014)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2014 introduction and overall index.

Woodcote is a medium-large rally which was, to be honest, not originally on our summer list as we had attended Fawley Hill Rally in May just a few miles away. However, once Yuehong declared she wanted to video the Vintage Train Day at the Perrygrove Railway near us, we would have a car and Woodcote was the best choice for a day out on the Saturday. We just had to remember not to take the pretty route as it was the Fairford Air Tattoo day... We made an early start to make the most of the early sunshine and found a well organised show with the best beer tent yet - it was run as a Camra Beer Festival. We left after the grand parade as the clouds had appeared and we were home earlier than usual with time to cook dinner and water the garden.

There were 30 engines and as expected more than half had been at Fawley Hill as well. Aveling and Porter rollers were over-represented but as one was was the delightful vertical cylinder 'Chimaera' I wasn't too upset. Otherwise perhaps the most interesting sight was the the three local Sentinel wagons turned out in identical livery, hugely impressive machines. There was sun in the early part of the day but most of the engines were facing west which was slightly better than facing north, Later it was too high before it disappeared, so the pictures are nothing special.
