Old Warden Steam Rally (16th - 18th September, 2016)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2016 introduction and overall index.

We had been to Old Warden in 2013 and 2014, the former had the direst weather imaginable while the latter was quite the opposite. We had given 2015 a miss to allow time for a degree of 'churn' in exhibits. 2016 was the 60th anniversary of the Bedford Steam Engine Preservation Society and the rally was promoted as a Showman's Road Locomotive Special which certainly lived up to its billing. It was undoubtedly the biggest and probably the best show we have visited (we are saving the GDSF for later). Unfortunately the weather did not play ball, it stopped raining at lunchtime on the Friday, there was a little bit of sunshine on Friday afternoon and Saturday was dull. There was brightness off (mainly) and on through Sunday but not enough for the serious photographers to do justice to the occasion. I suspect that after dark at the fairground on the Saturday night will have been quite a scene, this was taken late afternoon on Friday with a sparse crowd in attendance. I was told that Saturday was surprisingly busy and on Sunday there must have been many thousands present, the overflow car park was needed.

Choose the page you are interested in and within that, click on a thumbnail for a larger image. Then click again to return to the page. Amazingly for a show of this size there were just two engines listed in the programme which I was told had failed to show and there seemed to be four 'extras'..

David Collidge's Steam Scenes website ( is a fount of information and was a great help in compiling these pages.
