Helmsley Steam Rally (July 7th - 8th, 2018)

Helmsley 2018 was a medium sized rally with, for whatever reason, disappointingly only 2/3 as many steam engines present compared to our first visit in 2014 (another visitor saw roughly the same number in 2017). The setting remains superb, the sun shone when it was needed (early and late) and it was unfortunate that the event ended up clashing with an important football match so that when we returned from a midday walk to Rievaulx Abbey, cars were pouring out of the car park and things remained dead for the rest of the afternoon, the final 'grand parade' being anything but grand - a situation which should have been remedied on the Sunday. As before, the beautifully produced programme seemed to have gone to press too early with half a dozen no shows and four late entries.
