Helmsley Steam Rally (5th - 6th July, 2014)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2014 introduction and overall index.

Helmsley is an 'almost large' sized event, which we attended on the Saturday. The morning dawned wet which was no disaster in my book as we were promised sun later and I had to earn some brownie points with a visit to Castle Howard where the gardens at least I felt were worth looking at. The house interior was better than Chatsworth but that isn't saying much. So we pitched up part way through the first parade which was held under generally cloudy skies. Although this is primarily a steam show, the exhibits were well scattered and I felt a bit like the photographer at a wedding charged with capturing all the guests, knowing that the guest list contains names of people who will have failed to attend and that there will have been some last minute undocumented additions. The way the rally ground is laid out, engines tend to face generally north which doesn't help either. Enough of my grumbles, there was a very good selection of engines most of which were new to me and the sun shone enough for me to record all but a very few in fair conditions. I don't think I missed many, there was meant to be a portable present but I never found it.
