Click here for the Surviving Steam Road Engines page. Paul Gilbey reports on an extraordinary collection of nearly 100 road steam engines (as listed in the European Traction Engine register, 4th edition), perhaps not surprisingly more than 50 are portable engines from a single maker, the Swedish company Munktells, whose Type H portables is the most numerous type of engine still in existence in Europe. Paul points out that while the vast majority seem to be under cover, even those in the accessible main display are cramped and difficult to photograph and there is no easy access to those in other sheds which are not in public view. In addition to the '100', there are a number of unlisted engines which are incomplete to a greater or lesser extent! The engines have consciously been left 'as found', this accords with the philosophy of curator Tore Blom and, in any case, restoration in any numbers would be prohibitively expensive and impractical. Paul would like to thank Tore for his time and hospitality Not all these engines were what I would call 'working exports' but were instead bought in to broaden the offering.
