An Active Steam Roller in Burma, 2009 |
Chris Cairns was on the FarRail trip to the Burma Mines Railway in November 2009. The organisers arranged for a steam roller based near Lashio to attend - allegedly it is normally kept (works?) in an area off limits to foreigners. Aveling and Porter #8103 was built in 1913 and sent to Buckinghamshire County Council in the UK.
The engine carries a small plate: "Supplied by E.E.Kimbell, Boughton, Nr. Northampton, Phone Chapel Brampton 225". I am sure that they were agents and from the style of the plate, I guess it came to Burma just after World War 2. |
