Raj Steam - The Kosi Project Railway

The 1950s Kosi Project involved building a dam and hydroelectric power station with associated flood control and irrigation. To bring in stone a railway was built north from Bhimnagar first to Chakragatti and later on to Chatra, roughly paralleling the river. A branch was added to Ghopa near the Ghurka Camp where our photographer John Benson would later be stationed. From Bhimnagar a line linked south-east with Indian Railways at Forbesganj and there was a short service branch to the dam. Initial power was provided by former IR locomotives (mainly from the SER) but in 1959 six ZBs effectively took over for the final years. The Ghopa line closed by 1972 and all activity ceased some 10 years later.
