North Eastern Railway - Broad Gauge
Northeast Frontier Railway - Broad Gauge

The North Eastern Railway was an oddball, it was 100% metre gauge on formation, similarly the Eastern Railway whose territory it shared was 100% broad gauge. As some metre gauge NER lines were converted to broad gauge, they acquired some redundant steam locomotives, mainly from the Eastern Railway. No doubt it was realised that it was a waste of time building 'steam' facilities that had a limited future and hence Jamalpur was used for major overhauls and existing metre gauge sheds were 're-purposed' as far as possible.

The NFR had BG lines in the far west of its territory but had no initial connection to the rest of the Indian BG network as its line to Calcutta had been cut at partition. In due course, that was remedied by the construction of a new bridge. There were 3 sheds whose allocation was unexceptional but finding pictures of steam in this area has proved exceptionally challenging as it was a restricted area where a permit was needed to enter it.

Not surprisingly enthusiasts put their efforts into the narrow gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and the metre gauge which had more of interest than the broad gauge.
