Eastern Railway - Broad Gauge |

The Eastern Railway.served the Ganges valley to the west of Calcutta with many services originating from Howrah Station on the west side of the Hooghly River. With a large population, running trains was never easy and at the start of the period covering this section, electrification was well advanced reducing the numbers and particularly the types of steam locomotives at work. Nevertheless, there were some gems at work, even if few lasted beyond the early 1980s. This coverage broadly follows an oval westwards and then back again to the east. |
