Northern Railway - Broad Gauge

At the time of publication of Hugh Hughes book on the broad gauge by the Continental Railway Circle, the Northern Railway had the most steam locomotives of any of the regions. While part included Uttar Pradesh which was perhaps not everyone's favourite state, there was a very good mix within the Punjab which was much more acceptable. Unfortunately, it was off limits for a long period of the time covered by this compilation.

Fortunately, Keith Robinson was here in the 1970s and I squeezed in an intensive bash near the end. Of the less common classes, WLs worked here in quantity and XT and HPS classes lasted much longer here.

The remaining contributors seem to have had insufficient time to get a good spread of action shots like Keith Robinson but they did seem to have sought out those destinations which had more than the universal WGs and WPs.

The three 'Grand Tour' sections cover the region in a clockwise direction, starting in Delhi and concluding in Kanpur and Varanasi.

Jan Willem van Dorp's contribution is unique, mostly an in depth look at individual lines in the later days of steam.
