The International Steam Pages

Southern Railway - Broad Gauge

For the enthusiast, the Southern Railway offered colourful steam in exotic surroundings, but with few exceptions the locomotives were of the standard designs.

In practice such was the lack of significant amounts of coal from anywhere nearby that the railway was the first to eliminate steam (in the early 1980s) and this means that the photographic record is rather thin particularly with regard to trains on the move. The vast majority of pictures in this section show locomotives on shed or, at best, on pilot duties.
