Southern and South Central Railways - Narrow Gauge

There were three narrow gauge lines in the Southern and South Central Railway as constituted in the mid 1970s. All were 2ft 6in (762mm) gauge

The last narrow gauge line on the Southern Railway had originally run from Bangalore to Bangarapet 'the long way around' but the initial section from Bangalore to Yelahanka had been closed by the mid 1970s.

The two narrow gauge lines of the South Central Railway were later handed back to the Central Railway.

The Daund - Baramati line was a typical rural line but the former Barsi Light Railway with over 300km of line was narrow gauge on the grand scale with its own workshops at Kurduvadi.

If you have visited this section before, you may wish to go directly to Rob KIngsford-Smith's pictures of banking on the Ramling Ghat section of the Barsi system.
