The Power Station at Indare, Uruguay, 2013

James Waite reports on a December 2013 visit.

Arenara Indares SA was founded by Argentinian interests in 1888 to extract sand and stone on the Uruguayan side of the Rio de la Plata. They began their operations at Boca Del Rosario, at the mouth of the Rio Rosario around 130km west of Montevideo, in 1912. Eventually an extensive 600mm railway system was built up to service the operation. This eventually included a power station which will have serviced the estate, its residences (there were 1000 workers resident at one stage) and its workshops. When the system closed in 1982, everything was left exactly as it was. There are more pictures of the power station on this page - http://www.railwayinternational.com/SA/Uruguay/Indare/.(link broken by December 2021)

There are vertical cylinder engines of a type similar to those more familiar engines made by Belliss and Morcom. According to http://www.albert-gieseler.de/dampf_de/firmen0/firmadet1054.shtml, Delauney-Belleville specialised in this kind of engine, there seem to be at least three of them here.

There are two large over-boiler engines.

This one is a twin cylinder compound engine, I cannot trace any reference to its manufacturer. although the alternator / generator is from Peebles - http://www.peebles-uk.com/about-us/company-history (site unavailable October 2017)..

The final engine is from Lanz of Manheim:
