Stationary Steam Survivors in La Réunion, 2012

Thomas Kautzor reports on his visit on 15th/16th January 2012.

While there were still 13 sugar mills in 1967, there are now only two left, Sucrerie de Bois-Rouge in St-André (north) and Usine Le Gol in St-Louis (south). Both are modern factories and are now owned by Brazilian sugar giant Tereos.

Stationary steam engines are said to be preserved at only the following two places:

Musée Agricole et Industriel Stella Matutina, Piton-St-Leu:

Closed for reconstruction, http://www.stellamatutina.fr/ (link dead by 26th April 2014)

Mill converted to electric power shortly before closure.

Large Cie. Fives-Lille 1925 (ex Quartier Français) on display outside;
Cie. Fives-Lille on display outside;

La Saga du Rhum, Distillerie Isautier, chemin Fredelin, St-Pierre:

Open daily 10.00-18.00, Fridays –19.00, adults EUR 7.

Tangye (N°. 308AX), part of inside museum display. (This cannot be the engine number. This is a small crushing/milling system, typical for a rum distillery as opposed to a full sized sugar mill. RD)
