Thomas Kautzor reports on his visit from 4th to 7th
February 2012. Extra information has now been provided by Andre
Roulllard who worked in the industry here (19th May 2012). This report should be read in conjunction with Torsten
Schneider's earlier report from 2007.
L’Aventure du Sucre, Beau Plan SE, Pamplemousses (north):
W. & A. Mc. Onie Engineers, Glasgow (1860) - this is a beam engine (!)

Mather & Platt Ltd., Manchester & London, horizontal split casing steam turbine N°. 82644 on display outside.
Andre Roulllard adds that this drove a rotary liquid ring vacuum pump.
Britannia S.E. (south):
Large A&W Smith & Co., Glasgow (1851) on display in front of the mill.
Andre Roulllard adds that this engine probably comes from Mon Desert - Alma,
for in 1952 they bought a dual drive milling engine from that estate driven
by a A. & W. Smith engine and two Mirlees Watson engines.
Old mill at St. Avold just north of Britannia (towards Grand-Bois):
Mirrlees on display, Andre Roulllard says this is a slow speed vacuum pump.
Deep River S.E. (east):
Mirrlees Watson N°. 9027 on display.
Deep River Beau Champ (east):
Harvey Engineering Co. Ltd., Glasgow, 1907 on display outside factory; Andre
Roulllard confirms this is a vacuum pump.
Small engine on display outside factory:
Médine S.E. (west):
Wheel of large engine on display in front of factory.
Mon Trésor Mon Désert (south):
Large Corliss engine on display next to gate. Andre Roulllard says this was
the largest to work in Mauritius, with a steam cylinder 1270 x 1372; it was
ordered from Cail in France in 1911. It was in use until until 1970 when it
was replaced by a steam turbine.
Saint-Félix S.E. (south):
Mirrlees Watson N°. 8139;
Mirrlees Watson;
+ garden full of small “devices”. (These are a
large and medium Mirrlees pumps respectively RD)
