The Atjeh Tramway in the far north of Sumatra was in a sad sorry state when last visited in August 1971 – no locomotives had worked since April of that year due to lack of funds to pay the staff and purchase timber for fuel.

The diagram you see here is of the one 2-4-0T B1 class locomotive reputed to have been taken over by PNKA,
no 1. The mixed frame locomotive could have been built by Hanomag or the works at Sigli and is seen here at Sigli. This is the last
remainder of eleven similar locomotives once in service. The locomotive you see in the
background is number C59, similar to no C47 which will be shown later.

BB76 is one of six compound Mallets, built by Werkspoor, Du Croo and Brauns and Esllingen, to work the hill section between Sigli and Bandar Atjeh. These 0-4-4-2T locomotives have been rebuilt from 0-4-4-0T.

Next we have a shot of BB82, one of the last Mallets to have been built in the world; built by Nippon Shayo in 1961. This locomotive was derailed near Sigli on the hill section in April 1971.

0-6-0T C47 complete with tender is seen here in 1969 near Bandar Atjeh, whilst C54 sits forlornly outside the depot at Langsa in August 1971.

Nippon Sharyo built six 2-6-0 locomotives in 1961, this is their diagram.

4-6-0 C82 is the sole survivor of two of this class built by Werkspoor in 1922, seen here under repair in the running shed at Sigli.

The last of the Atjeh locomotive classes is the D100. Originally there were twelve of these Du Croo and Brauns and Hanomag locomotives brought into service.
First is D105 at Langsa, the other is derelict D104 at Sigli.
Notes:
Parts of the railway were thought to have been re-opened with
diesels but steam was never revived.
