The first of the four coupled axle class we are to see is a D10 Hartmann outside frame 0-8-0T with flexible Klien Lindner end axles. These are ex Semarang Joana Stoomtram Mij and Serajoedal Stoomtram Mij engines and are to be found at Tegal and Purwokerto.


D11 0-8-0T are all concentrated at Malang in East Java and are used for shunting and branch work. Almost all of the eleven original Hohenzollern built locomotives are still in service.


Both the D12 and D13 classes have met their demise. None are now known to survive. This is the D13 diagram.


D14 engines, popular for use with mixed and passenger traffic, and for shunting duties are found at many depots and sub depots in West Java. These 2-8-2T wood and oil residue fired locomotives were built in 1921 and 1922 by Hanomag and Werkspoor.


The D15 class is similar to the D10. You will note that the connecting rods have been disconnected from the rear axles making them in effect 0-6-2T. I was informed that this had been done to lessen the risk of damage when negotiating tight curves.


All member of the D16 0-8-0T class still in service are to be found on Madura island, operating from Kamal, although D1602 is seen here, lying out of service at Sidotopo, on mainland Java.


The sole survivor of the D17 class 0-8-0T is seen here at Kamal pulling a local passenger train. This class is based on the D16 although 8 years junior and built by Hartmann.


D50 class locomotives are normally to be found at Djember in East Java, and in South Sumatra. These 2-8-0 superheated engines were built by a number of companies between 1914 and 1928. D5031 seen here at the depot at Tanjungkarang displays a plate recording its conversion to oil residue firing on 15 September 1966.


The D51 class locomotives were originally built for the Hedjaz railway, but after Lawrence inflicted considerable damage during his exploits in Arabia, these locomotives were diverted to Indonesia and can now be found at Tjepu and Kutardjo.


The D52 2-8-2 Krupp main line 2-8-2 are a scaled down version of the Reichsbahn 41 class. A hundred of these locomotives were built in 1950/1 and are to be found throughout Java and South Sumatra.


No examples of the Alco DD50 class engines remain.


The DD51 class 2-8-8-0, almost identical to the DD50, with double chimneys can be found derelict in Djakarta behind the wagon works at Manggarai. Other examples, also out of service, can be seen at Purwakarta (here DD5110) and Madiun.


DD52 superheated compound Mallets are found on the hill section between Bandung and Tasikmalaya. Only one or two of these locomotives are now to be found in working condition.


The F10 locomotives are deployed in East Java (and West Sumatra). These Hanomag and Werkspoor locomotives were built between 1912 and 1920. In West Sumatra their main role is the movement of coal from the mines at Sawahlunto to the rack sections of the line.


Notes:

D12 - this class never existed, the solitary locomotive 'in the class' was actually a C25!
D13 - a derelict survivor was spotted at Madiun Works in 1973
