C30 class engines are to be found mostly in South Sumatra although some went
to West Sumatra. About half of the original 47 2-6-2T locomotives survive,
this diagram is of the West Sumatra batch..

Most of the C31 0-6-0Ts have come to an end as can be seen here at Kamal in Madura. Only three or four of the original 20 locomotives built
around 1900 for the Madoera Stoomtram Mij now survive.

C3201 and C3202 are two Nippon Sharyo 2-6-2T shipped from Japan during
the Second World War.

Just two of the original C50 class Winterthur and Hartmann Pacifics built just prior to the First World War now survive in South Sumatra. These locomotives are now to be
found at Tandjungkarang pulling local trains, this is C5005.

These 1912 C51 Beyer Peacock 4-6-0 have been modified ex works with
smoke deflectors. Only two of the original ten locomotives brought into
service are now out of service – a fine record for these superheated
Belpaire fireboxed locomotives.

All C52 4-6-0 in service in Java at the time of the Japanese
occupation were shipped off to other parts of South East Asia and are
reported in Thailand and Cambodia.

Time has not been too kind to the C53 superheated four cylinder compound
Pacifics. Only one of the original Werkspoor built locomotives was found in active
service, C5317 being seen
here, in steam, at Sidotopo depot, in Surabaja, in June 1971.

Time has also not been too kind to the Hartmann and Beyer Peacock C54 class
4-6-0.
Only five of the original 20 locomotives built in 1922 now survive. These
are to be found at Tegal (C5410 here) and Kutardjo. A number were shipped off to the Deli
system in North Sumatra – only one now remains in working order.

The CC10 Mallet 2-6-6-0T compounds can be found at a number of depots in Java. They are normally to be found in the more mountainous
areas, however both locomotives featured here are located at Rangkasbetung in West Java. The later Werkspoor locomotives
(CC1031 left) differ from earlier examples of the class (CC1021 right)
exhibiting a shorter dome and chimney and sloping tanks.

Superheated CC50 compound Mallets can be found at seven depots in Java. These 2-6-6-0 ex-Staats Spoorwegen (State Railway Company) locomotives were built at Winterthur and by Werkspoor in 1927 and 1928.

Notes:
C32 - the plate reads "Japan Locomotive Works" at
the top with "Nagoya" at the bottom, the central symbol is
"Asia" and it was built in the 13th year of the emperor's rein, in
other words 1938. (Thanks to Yuehong for this one. RD)
C52 - one of these locomotives survives preserved in
Thailand.
