Garratts in West Africa

This page illustrates examples of articulated steam locomotives - click here for the introduction to Garratt locomotives.

Both these pictures are taken from our CD-ROM Safari Steam.

Nigeria

'Pacific' Garratts were not common but Nigeria had 22 of them. 517, 4-6-2 + 2-6-4, formerly 'Sir Aubrey Graham', was built by Beyer Peacock (7051/1943). Cliff Schoff saw it at Ebute Metta for repairs in January 1967, but it may not have returned to traffic.

Sierra Leone

The 762mm (2' 6") Sierra Leone railway closed in 1976, before then Jeremy Wiseman photographed 4-8-2 + 2-8-4 64 outside the shed in November 1964. One of these locomotives is reported to have survived and is now in the railway museum here.
