The International Steam Pages

Survey of steam locomotives spotted outside the North East of Brazil, Jan 2002

This list has been compiled by Eddie Edmunson. It is bound to be incomplete and additions/corrections are very welcome. At the time of first uploading Eddie is in the throes of movement, so please email me first if you want to get in contact with him (Email: webmaster@internationalsteam.co.uk).  It has been converted from Word Doc format and I am painfully aware that it is not really suitable for display in some browsers, but the content justifies a good look....

Martin Murray's comments (April 2002) are added in RED.

City/site: Paranapiacaba SP {my visits in 1987 & 1994}.

Note: On my first visit to Paranapiacaba in 1987 it was still possible on Sundays to take a delightful trip by steam loco down a short stretch of the famous Serra line. I have an excellent video of this visit. On my second visit in April 1994, the Viaduto da Gruta Funda had been declared unsafe, and the tourist excursion stopped. A friend visited in 1999 and found the two well-preserved brake locos well preserved and the stationary engine in ‘excellent condition’. The Sharp Stewart was still under cover.

Kerr Stuart manufactured 12 brake locos for the São Paulo Railway, nos. 661-672 in the period July 1899 to May 1900.

A friend visited in May 1997 + photo published in LI #42 (1998). This loco was running a tourist excursion on the old Mogyana Estrada de Ferro, which ran from Jaguariúna to the station of Anhumas, (short of Campinas).

Note: I believe that the Campinas ABPF has a No 2, ALCO, 68621/1932, 0-4-0T, which has been reported as intended for running tourist excursions along the Campos de Jordão, between Abernessia and Capivari. This loco has now returned to Carlos Gomes.

CRJ # 54 (1983) reports arrival in Jaguariúna of no. 210/Baldwin/35218/1911/4-6-0/100 cm/ex-Oeste de Minas "in good condition and should soon be steamable".

CRJ # 54 (1983) also reports arrival in Jaguariúna of no. 725/ALCO/---/---/2-8-2/100 cm/ex-Mogiana, "formerly used for providing steam at Campins main station".

CRJ # 54 (1983) also reports that two locos will be transported to Jaguariúna from Cia de Cemento Naciopnal de Portland Mauá: no 103/0-6-0T and no 2/ALCO/0-4-0ST.

See ABPF list at end of this survey.

Note: A friend saw (in 2000) a locomotive preserved at the Hotel Fazenda Duas Marias, Estrada Campinas-Moji Mirim, Jaguariúna. This is Mogiana 417, Beyer Peacock 3817/1896.

EFVM

Repaired in João Neiva and made last trip to Vitória on 25 July 1991. There was a later ‘reforma geral’ in May 1984, for which retired railway workers were contracted to help. Wood-burning. Goes out every 3 or 4 months.

Photo published in O Vapor (p 183) .

Note: O Vapor (p 182) also gives "no 1, 0-4-0T, first loco on EFVM, called ‘Felippe Carpenter’ as preserved". Photo (1985) also published.

Engineers in Vitória told me that the Valle do Rio Doce has 4 steam locomotives: (1) Vitória, (2) Itabira MG, a Baldwin 2-8-2 which does not work, (3) Gov Valladares MG (small loco), João Neiva ES (small loco).

The four locos are all described in the recent book on the EFVM. They are as follows

Vitoria, ES: No. 185, 2-8-2 Baldwin 72666/46 is now kept in the museum at Pedro Nolasco station in Vitoria. It is in working order

Itabira, MG.: No 176, 2-8-2 Baldwin 70054/43 is plinthed here.

Gov. Valladares, MG: FC 1, 0-4-0T, Rheinmetall 708/1923 is plinthed here.

João Neiva, ES: FC 2, 0-4-0T, O&K is now in the museum in João Neiva, having been previously plinthed in Porto Velho. The boiler number is reported as 1288/1904, but this was a 0-4-4-2 Mallet tank, 760mm gauge, for the Steinbeisbahn in Bosnia. A more plausible identity for FC 2 is O&K 1388. In preserved condition the loco carries plates FC 1.

An ex-EFVM loco is plinthed at Timoteo, MG. It is a 4-6-0, believed to be 87, Baldwin 58953/1926.

City/site: Porto Velho RO

There is also a Leopoldina rack tank here, No. 1, Esslingen 3735/11. When the museum was set up there was talk of an old 4-4-0 on display in Volta Redonda coming here too, but nothing seems to have been heard of this for twenty years or so.

Also in Rio de Janeiro, at Barão de Maua station, is Leopoldina 51, 2-4-2, metre gauge, Baldwin Extra order 1566/1925, possibly a rebuild of Baldwin 4944/1880, a 2-4-2T.

I have not visited. A friend sent me photos of this loco in 1998. Details are difficult to make out. General condition seems reasonable. Kelso Medici reports this as EF Paulista 610, a 4-6-0, metre gauge, ALCO 53129/1913. It is moderately welll restored, but displayed in a re-creation of the classic accident in Marseilles where a loco plunged through a station wall onto the street below.

Other possibilities:

  • RJ: A locomotive on display in the town of Conservatório in Rio de Janeiro State? Martin adds: Conservatoria. There is certainly a loco on display, RMV 206, a 4-6-0 which should be Baldwin 34217/10. I found two pictures, at http://www.folhadoturismo.com.br/images/fotos_lugares/Conservatoria-03.jpg and http://www.valencarj.com/images/Conserv/2.jpg which are the same loco, possibly at different locations. Carlos Alberto Teixeira confirms (9th August 2007) the identity and adds that the locomotive is on display in the town centre and more pictures are available on http://picasaweb.google.com.br/cteixeirapicasa/Conservatoria_Luciana_Carlos_20070805?authkey=vYWg1xgmN7A

  • AL: A locomotive ex-Leão Utinga preserved at Tecidos Othon Bezarra?

  • ES. Town of João Neiva. Engineers in Vitória told me there is a small locomotive in the museum (perhaps a Baldwin) in this town. Museim opened in Aug 1995.

  • MG: Town of Gov Valladares. Engineers in Vitória told me there is a locomotive in this town (2-8-2) which belongs to the Valle do Rio Doce.

  • MG. Town of Itabira. Engineers in Vitória told me there is a Baldwin 2-8-2 in the town of Itabira, belonging to VRD.

  • Three above see notes on EFVM above.

  • MG. Town of Juiz de Fora, the Núcleo Histórico Ferroviário has a ‘locomotiva de pedreira No 1’ according to leaflet received from the Núcleo.

  • Juiz de Fora had two locos on display at the station, reported in CRJ 68/226 as O&K 6362 and Decauville 8280. The latter number is incorrect, and was corrected to 6280 by Sergio Martire. This is still an impossible Decauville loco; instead this is O&K 6280. Both were 0-4-0T, 600mm, 20HP, delivered in 1913 to Schmidt, Trost and Co, Brazil (6362) and Cia Mechanica, Rio de Janeiro (6280). In April 2000 neither was seen at the station. A current address for the Nucleo would be most welcome.

MG. Town of Ribeirão Vermelho, a little north of Lavras. The disused roundhouse at the station contains 8 dumped ex-VFCO metre-gauge locomotives. Information from CRJ # 54 (1983)

    • Four 4-6-0s nos. 223/225/227 + Baldwin 54061/1920

    • Three 4-6-2s nos 307 [CRJ # 43 says this belongs to ABFP], 315 (Baldwin 37829/1912), & 325.

    • One 2-8-0 no 423.

    • A loco is on display at the disused station here, probably a Baldwin 4-6-0 or 4-6-2. Eight such locos were dumped here in 1983, as Eddie reports.

  • MG: Anapolis. LI #36 (1997) has photo of a 0-6-0 of EFG; LI #41 (1997/98) carries this information:

> 1/Borsig/6179/1907/0-6-0 originally built as a 2-6-0, and now plinthed at Anapolis.

  • MG: Volta Redonda. Two locos (both 0-4-0T) are on display in the zoo here. One is given as a Krauss from CODESP (Santos Docks), the other as a Krupp (no origin given). No suitable Krupp locos were delivered to Brazil, so I think that this is also a CODESP Krauss (800mm gauge).

  •

  • RS: Restoration work on railway station in São Leopoldo (Museu do Trem), will include the restauration of ‘locomotives’ which are stored there. [Zero Hora, 25 April, 1999]

  •

  • PR: ABPF Rio Negrinho/Rio Vermelho. DTS (1994) reported: "ABPF have a concession from RFFSA to operate over the well utilised metre gauge line west from Rio Negrinho down to Joinville and special trains therefore have to fit in with freight services. 2-8-2 (No.160) is available and is used every two months for public excursions. Ex- EFDTC Mallet 203 is on the premises for re-furbishment". (See my notes above on Tubarão). CRJ # 54 (1983) reports no.160 2-8-2 ex-EFDTC, and that there was an ex-EFDTC Mallet 204 there for restoration.

  • MM visited Rio Negrinho in September 2001. the following locos were present:

    Mogiana 770 1D1 Baldwin 72216/45 or 760 or 768
    Sorocabana 416 2C Lima 1290/12 not confirmed

  • PR: Londrina. I have photos taken in 1999 sent by a friend of a small loco on display <0-6-0T, no. 101>. No indication of where this is.

  • PR: Londrina. On my last visit (1999) the Railway Museum was preparing to receive at least one steam locomotive. Also at Londrina is Paulista 840, 4-6-0, metre gauge, Baldwin 34883/1910, previously in Campinas. Neither this nor 101 were seen in September 2001. Where is the museum in Londrina?

  • PR: Rio Negro. Revista Ferroviária Nov 1995 reports 2 locos ex- 2o Batalhão Ferroviário: (both preserved at Batalhão Mauá):

    • 1/Vulcan/4252/1939/0-4-0/ "Rio Negro"

    • 3/Hannomag/6071/1910/0-4-0/ "Paraguaçu"

  •

  • SP: Indústrias Matarazzo. Derelict locomotive abandoned. [Photo published in Folha de São Paulo, Section Mais!, 29 Oct 1995]. Is this the same location as the Museu Matarazzo in Bebedouro, SP, where Kelso Medici reports four locos?

  • SP: Estação da Luz. Revista Ferroviária July 1995 reports: ‘brake loco’ no.2/KS/662/1890 preserved in gardens in front of RFFSA/SR-4 locomotives deposit near Estação da Luz, São Paulo. This loco reported by Kelso Medici.

  • SP: Museu da Tecnologia de São Paulo. The Museum homwpage reports as preserved: 193/Henschel/--/1936/4-10-2/160cm/"Jibóia", ex- Companhia Paulista de estradas de Ferro, taken to Museum in Feb 2000, where it was completely restored. This loco reported by Kelso Medici, works number 22995, rebuilt ex metre gauge. It is probably the loco reported above at Jundiai in 1978 (CRJ 33).

  • SP: Locomotive preserved in Museu Paulista de Antiguidades, Caçapava (ex Usina Leão Utinga?) Kelso Medici gives this as O&K 9710/1921, 0-6-2T, 500mm, ex Usina Leão Utinga 4.

  • SP: Campinas – Preserved in Parque Taquaral: Ex Mogyana BP 4-6-0 of 1896 (no. 302). [CRJ # 33 (1978)] This loco, BP 3824, was at Pedrogulho (as shown below), and is now at Carlos Gomes (seen 2000 and 2001).

  • SP: Campinas – Preserved near the station: ex-Paulista Baldwin 4-6-0, 14255/1895 (no. 604). [CRJ # 33 (1978)] [DTS 1981] This loco is also at Carlos Gomes. There seems to be considerable confusion over its identity. Reg Carter gives Baldwin 14437/1895, Eddie (below) gives 14255 or 14253.

  • SP: Campinas – Preserved in the station, but as a stationary boiler: ex-Mogyana ALCO 2-8-2, 65543/1924 (no. 725). [CRJ # 33 (1978)] [DTS 1981] Also now at Carlos Gomes.

  • SP: Campinas: the Pedregulho-Rifaina line operated by ABPF, consisting of about 33kms of the former line between Campinas and Uberaba. CRJ # 54 (1983) reports four locomotives on site:

    • 302/BP/4-6-0/---/1890 ex-Mogyana now at Carlos Gomes (seen 2000 and 2001).

    • 332/Baldwin/4-6-2/58852/1925 ex-EFOM now at São Lourenço (ex Cruzeiro).

    • 338/Baldwin/4-6-2/---/1925/ ex-EFOM now at Carlos Gomes (seen 2000 and 2001).

    • 405/BP/4-6-0/---/1889 ex-Mogyana. now at Carlos Gomes (seen 2000 and 2001).

  • SP:Campinas: CRJ # 54 (1983) reports that the ABPF in Campinas had just received no.50/Henschel/21687/1930/0-10-0/ "Tentugal"/ex- Usina Sta Amara. now at Carlos Gomes (seen 2000 and 2001).

  • SP: Bragança Paulista – preserved on main road from SP to Belo Horizonte: Kitson 2-6-0 ex-Bragantina, identical to #4 preserved in Atibaia. Information from CRJ # 33 (1978). CRJ # 54 (1983) gives this no. 3 ‘Dr Luiz Leme’. Another source gives: 3/Kitson/2366/1881/100 cm/ "Dr Lins de Vasconcelos". There is some confusion over the names of the EF Bragantina locos.

  • SP: Piracicaba. Usina – one locomotive remains: Baldwin 2-6-2T/ no.3. Information from CRJ # 33 (1978). Photo published in World of South American Steam, where it is shown as ST. Another source gives: 1/Baldwin/39667/1913/2-4-2ST/100 cm/ ex-Usina Santa Barbara. Kelso Medici reports this as 1/Baldwin/39661/1913/2-4-2ST, which is confirmed by the Baldwin works list. 39667 was ATSF.

  • SP: Vila Rezende. Preserved at entrance to Dedini steelworks in suburb of Vila Rezende: Baldwin/2-4-2T/no. 39661/1913 (no 1). Ex-Usina Santa Barbara do Oeste. Information from CRJ # 33 (1978). This appears to be another report of the loco above.

  • SP: Cachoeira Paulista. DTS 1981 reports

    • 353/Baldwin/59736/1927/4-6-2 as "Preserved. This classic Baldwin Pacific is kept here and works occasional special trains over the main line".

    • 5/Baldwin/59736/1927/0-6-0ST/ "Preserved outside depot" Both these locos are now at the Immigrants’ Museum in São Paulo (see below). The correct data for No. 5 is Baldwin 55341/1922.

  • SP: Cajamar. Cia Brasileira de Cimento. DTS 1981 reports: (60 cm gauge)

    • 5/ALCO/68633/1933/2-4-2ST "in service"

    • 6/Porter/7913/1945/2-6-2

    • 16/Baldwin/32694/1908/4-6-0/ex-Dourado Rly no. 5.

    • 17/Baldwin/37399/1911/2-4-0/ "In service. Ex-Cantareira Tramway. Baldwin lists as 2-6-0". Possible error in Baldwin list? Loco definitely now 2-4-0.

    • LI #54 (2000) has a colour photo (dated Feb 1974) of #7/2-6-2 and #14/2-6-2T, both oil fired.

In the quarry at Cajamar are seven locos, all more or less derelict, as follows:

  • 101C1t+TBLW 40675/13

  • 171BBLW 37399/91

  • 21B1stAlco-Cooke 66405/25

  • 141C1t+TBLW 40674/13

  • 8B1tO&K 5990/12. The boiler plate reads Decauville Ainé Nowawes Nr. 5990 1912. Nowawes is an alternative name for Drewitz, where the O&K factory was/is. O&K 5990 is given as Decauville Brazil in the works list.

  • 1C1stBLW 14963/96

More locos are derelict at Gato Preto, just off the Anhumas motorway. These are:

  • 1B1stAlco-Cooke 66404/25built as 1B1t

  • 71C1HKP 7914/45

  • SP:Itatinga/Bertioga. Cia Docas de Santos - CODESP. (80 cm).

    • Krauss 1/2092/1889/0-4-0T/ "Lavoura".

    • Krauss 12/---/0-4-0T/ "Itapema"

Note: nos 1 & 12 are reported as still working on a 7 km line to Itatinga power station, as reserve power on the electrified line.

    • Krauss 8/---/0-4-0T/ "Mont Serrat". This is now at the Sorocaba Shopping Centre. DTS 1981 reported seeing nos 1,8 &12.

Note: The Itatinga Power Station homepage reports that there is a Krauss on display in São José do Rio Preto [no.9 "Vallongo"] which is identical in all characteristics with the others in Itatinga, and that they suspect it may have come from CODESP.

  • SP: São José do Rio Preto. Krauss no 9 "Vallango" reported as on display; it is suspected that it may have come from Itatinga power station.

No.1 is now plinthed in front of the CODESP headquarters in Santos. "Lavoura" was originally the name of No. 2, Krauss 2093/1889. Similarly, "Mont Serrat" was originally the name of No. 7, Krauss 2761/1892, whereas No. 8 was "Bertioga", Krauss 2762/1892. No. 8 is now on private premises in Votorantim. No. 9 "Valongo" is Krauss 2786/92, a 10HP loco, whereas 1 and 8 are 40HP and 12 "Itapema" is Krauss 3092/1895, 55HP.

  • SP: Bananal. CRJ # 104 (1995) reports that no. 308/2-10-4 is preserved at Bananal, at the Station, in State of São Paulo. Another source gives: 302-M/Baldwin/62359/1940/2-10-4/ex-308 EFDTC. Another possibility is: 302-M/Baldwin/62358/1940/2-10-4/100 cm/ex EF Central do Brasil.CRJ # 104 (1995) reports that no. 308/2-10-4 is preserved at Bananal, at the Station, in State of São Paulo. Kelso Medici gives RFFSA 302-9M, Baldwin 62356/1940, ex EFDTC, 1957 ex EFCB 1655. 62356 is probably a misprint, as 62358 is the correct works number for 302/1655.

  • SP: Museu do Immigrante (near Brás Metro Station). ABPF Newsletter (Nov 1999) reports:

    • Pacific 353 ex-Central do Brasil operates at weekends.

    • No 5 Baldwin ex-Central do Brasil is also in operation.
      See note above.

  •

  • GO: Museu Ferroviária in the town of Pires do Rio. There is a ten wheel locomotive + a second loco preserved called the ‘Vaporeza’ in the Museum, which ran on the Pires do Rio to Brasília line. [O Popular, Goiânia, 11 Feb 1996]. Revista Ferroviaria Nov 1995? The loco preserved in main square of Pires do Rio in front of the Station is: Vulcan/0-4-0/ "Mafra"/ ex- 20 Batalhão Ferroviario of Rio Negro PR – donation of 1980.
This looks like Vulcan Iron Works 4252/1939 reported above at Rio Negro, though the name "Mafra" suggests it may be a sister loco. A visit to Rio Negro in September revealed no locos, but the barracks were not entered.

  • SC: Any locos preserved in Imbituba? Wildish (1981) reports an O&K 0-4-0T preserved at Imbituba Docks, but I suspect that this may be the Maffei (No. 6) now at Tubarão.
