Surviving Railway Cranes in Asia

This is just one of a series of pages covering surviving Railway Cranes across the world. Click here for the Index.

Chris Capewell (chriscapewell AT googlemail.com) has provided the following data, he would greatly appreciate additions, corrections and confirmation for data with a yellow background.

We would welcome more pictures of cranes in this list which can be used to illustrate the article, as links are notoriously ephemeral.

Bangladesh (added 8th May 2012)

Heinrich Hubbert has sent these pictures which surprisingly show that active steam cranes remain here:

Lalmonirhat, situated in the Northwest of Bangladesh, this MG shed hosts an oil-fired Hitachi build from 1968. Staff claimed it can be fired up get fully operational within 20 minutes.

Parbatipur (also Parbotipur), on the other side of the Tista river. This picture of an older CS crane was taken by holding the camera over the shed wall to capture this MG crane.

Khulna, BG, Hitachi 1968, oil-fired, the pictures are from March and November 2009 of the same crane.

China

The national rail system has no steam cranes in service; but industrial users have several breakdown cranes (Z601 type) and coaling cranes (Z151/Z152 type) still in operational service, many are ex CNR. Apart from the examples below, there are more pictures available on a separate page. In 1999, a standard Z151 type fuels a JF at Tongchuan (Rob Dickinson photo):

This is a Z601 at Jalainur opencast mine in 2007 (Rob Dickinson photo):

This is a Z151 at Beitai Steelworks in 2003 (Rob Dickinson photo):

This is a Z152 at Sandaoling in 2005 (Rob Dickinson photo) :

No steam crane is known to be in formal preservation.

India (updated 9th May 2012, new pictures from Heinrich Hubbert, several preserved items below and a new page of survivors)

This page contains a number of pictures (mainly metre gauge) of steam cranes taken in the 21st century - http://www.irfca.org/gallery/Suburban/AccidentReliefVehicles/. I have provided direct links below (as of October 2011). I have also added a page of collected images from the IRFCA site (another picture 10th November 2011) and also a further page from Heinrich Hubbert (9th May 2012)

The most recent picture I have found here is of former Northern Railway 1236 (CS 1953) which was taken by Bharat Vohra on the metre gauge at Hanumangarh in January 2010, the edge of a second and maybe third crane can be seen. The original report is on  http://irfca.org/apps/trip_reports/show/424.

This is Heinrich Hubbert's picture of the Udaipur ART on the road in January 2010:

This is Mick Pope's picture of metre gauge TSC 505 at Mysore (South Western Railway) in November 2006. The original picture is on http://www.irfca.org/gallery/Suburban/AccidentReliefVehicles/cranemys.jpg.html.

The following are also shown on the IRFCA site, those indicated with "@" are on Heinrich Hubbert's page:

Several steam breakdown cranes are still operational in 2011, particularly on the metre gauge. . Any information would be gratefully received.

The delivery of some 70 no. 140 ton capacity diesel cranes in the last twenty years will have considerably reduced the number on the broad gauge.

A note re the symbol "ソ"
In Japanese the Soviet Union is often represented as “ソ”. So, it is possible to misunderstand “ソ” indicates products of the USSR.
Actually “ソ” represents the first character of Sojusha, a carriage for handling heavy objects. It also appears to mean strong man and an images search will bring forward many pictures of sportsmen!, particularly sumo wrestlers.

Bernd Seiler reports "Thai Nguyen steelworks has at least one serviceable steam crane (which was never in use when I was there). I remember to have seen two steam cranes there." For pictures see: http://www.steampreservation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=557 and http://www.steampreservation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=558. John Taubeneck considers that it resembles an Ohio crane, but it is more likely that it is a Chinese model (albeit maybe American influenced) as all standard gauge material in the country is relatively recent and originated in China when the 'new' link between Hanoi and Guangxi was completed ca 1954.
