After a gentle start for 80km to Boa Viagem, the climb to the hills in the background starts in earnest. Operation was anything but frenetic, the weekly mixed train ('misto') taking a generous 12 hours for the single journey. Usually there were a couple of goods trains a week too but annual freight rarely surpassed 20 000 tonnes and together with some 12 000 passengers, the economics of the line cannot have been good. (BR)
