The International Steam Pages

Fawley Hill Steam Rally (20th - 22nd May, 2016)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK since 2013. Click here for the 2016 introduction and overall index.

This was no run-of-the-mill event, it was styled as the the 80th birthday party for Bill McAlpine, a successor to the 70th birthday party for his wife Judy in 2014. Simply, it was designed as a tribute to traditional British engineering skills although these pages only cover the steam side, naturally. It was once again a civilised and hugely enjoyable occasion on an occasionally sunny Sunday. There had been heavy rain on the Saturday and as a result the engines were restricted to their pegs, the few that tried to move soon slithered to a halt. We arrived at opening time (10.00) and left just after 15.00 as the clouds started to gather. The only real disappointment was the 'Henley prices' in the catering tent, I declined to pay 4.50 for a pint of very ordinary bitter. Here Judy McAlpine issues instructions to Mark Walker in his truly international tank.

I recorded 63 assorted road engines in attendance, significantly below the 'wish list' in the programme; I suspect a fair number of owners were understandably unwilling to risk their engines becoming marooned having seen the weather forecast.

David Collidge's Steam Scenes website ( is a fount of information and was a great help in compiling these pages.
