God's Garden 2013

Most of the rural counties of England could fairly lay claim to be "God's own County". When I have lived in the UK, I have nearly always been resident in or very close to Gloucestershire so that would naturally be my choice for the title. We are extraordinarily lucky to have the opportunity to live on the eastern edge of the Forest of Dean in the west of the county, with rolling open country to the east and extended wooded country to the west. Apart from the time when a few spots have masses of bluebells in flower, the autumn sees it at its very best. I have no time for organised religion but Dorothy Frances Gurney could not be faulted when she penned "One is nearer God's heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth."

Elsewhere I have described our wonderful 2013 summer in our own garden, here I celebrate the colours of the FoD, the pictures were all taken on a bike trip on 29th October 2013, no artificial colours have been introduced  :

The best things in life are free... Certainly that applies in spades to today's excursion, however there was a bonus. Yuehong is extremely fond of Sweet Chestnuts and in parts of the forest they have been deliberately planted along the paths, we were able to help ourselves to some of what the squirrels and wild boar had left behind:

I didn't weigh them but both panniers on the back of my bicycle were almost full:

It was a long bike ride, we were both out of practice and Yuehong vanished to bed immediately after dinner!
