Stephan Thierfelder reports on his trip to the Tuzla area between 21st and 24th
October, 2008:
Flying in/out via Sarajewo, further transportation by rental car
Durdevik
- in service 62 111, obviously the only available engine
- days of operation: Monday to Wednesday, if needed Thursday and Friday (information from local people living along the line); confirmation by our observations: We have seen train operations only on 21 and 22 Oct, no trains on 23 and 24 Oct (Thursday and Friday)
- Mode of operation:
Light engine (tender first) leaves the mine of Durdevik at about 8 am towards Zivinice station (loco exchange to diesel), immediate return with empty wagons (chimney first), back at Durdevik mine at about 9 am.
Train with loaded wagons leaves the mine of Durdevik at about 1 pm (engine tender first), immediate return light engine (chimney first), back at the mine at about 2 pm
Dubrave
- Seen in service 33-236, we did not check the shunting yard of the mine
- Days of operation: Probably Monday to Friday with train service as needed towards the end of the week. We saw steam operations 21 to 23 Oct with no service on Friday 24 Oct 2008.
- Mode of operation including shunting in Ljubace:
33-236 (chimney first) leaves the mine of Dubrave with loaded wagons at about 2:45 pm towards Ljubace (loco change to diesel), stopping prior to the junction with the „main“ line. At that time a diesel class 661 is already standing on track 3 of the station, opposite of the station building. Within 15 minutes both engines exchange their trains on the Eastern section of the station with now 33-236 pulling the empty stock back to the mine and the diesel engine heading towards the power station near Tuzla with the loaded wagons. As a disadvantage of this shunting
maneouvre the steam engine never comes close to the unspoiled historical station building.
Sikulje
- In service 33-503
- Days of operation: We saw the steam trains from the mine of Sikulje to Lukavac station on Tuesday, 21 Oct but did not investigate any other day
- Mode of operation:
Class 33 steam engine heads a pretty heavy train of loaded wagons from the mine of Sikulje (directly located along the main line towards Dabhoi) to Lukavac station (about 3-4 kilometers) leaving the mine tender first at about 3:30 pm. After some shunting the steam engine leaves Lukavac chimney first with empty wagons at about 4 pm.
Banovici
- Standard gauge: 62-125 is shunting on the yard of Oskova, sun is best in the afternoon
- Narrow gauge: 83-158 is pulling the loaded wagons, which arrived pulled by diesel class 740 from the mine of Banovici, to the big bunkers for unloading on the upper part of the big coal loading complex of Oskova. Sun is best in the morning.
