LCGB Locomotive Club of Great Britain

2009 Tour Programme

LCGB is pleased to present to members some details of our Overseas Tours in 2009. The making up of the programme is never very easy with so many competing events some of which mean that dates are sometimes uncertain. During the course of 2009 more events and attractions will become known and we will be proposing tours to encompass these as and when details become firm.

Bookings for tours must be on an overseas tours booking form and may be sent in at any time to the tour organiser whose name follows the tour details. Fuller details and closing dates will be announced in news sheets during the course of the year. During the course of the year various weekend events become known and extra tours will be operated taking in the more interesting events.

All members are welcome on these tours but any friend or colleague who wishes to take part must become a member of LCGB or pay a surcharge for temporary membership. Click here for LCGB membership details.

Please send any tour enquiries where no email address is given to Adrian Palmer akpalmer@talktalk.net.

TOUR 8/09 – BENELUX IGE NETHERLANDS EXPRESS 4th to 11th September 2009
Now read Netherlands Instead of Benelux – see separate page.

TOUR 9/09 – FRANCE/ITALY TENDE LINE FESTIVAL Wednesday 8th to Thursday 16 October 2009
This tour is cancelled. Mike Hedderly has had the rug pulled from under him. A triple whammy in fact. The local authorities have withdrawn funding for the event. 141R1126 would not be able to operate due to engineering works and finally there is a problem with pathways over the Tende line! Should the situation change during the year the tour could be revived.

TOUR 10/09 – ERITREA. STEAM SPECIALS Tuesday 20th – Wednesday 28th October 2009
Full details of this tour are shown on a separate page. This tour remains open for bookings. Despite a modest increase to cover exchange rate moves this tour is at a bargain price and over £800 cheaper than the only other known UK operator offering Eritrea this year. Tour definitely runs. Just a few places remaining. (ADRIAN PALMER)

TOUR 15/09 - ALBANIA ADDITIONAL TOUR Saturday 10th to Friday 16th October 2009
This tour is FULL.
Full details of this interesting and reasonably priced tour are shown on a separate page.

FUTURE PLANS – 2010!

BULGARIA
We are actively pursuing a comprehensive steam tour with 3 days of mainline steam traction and 2 days on the narrow gauge. We will also be using interesting modern traction on the non-steam section including Ex BR Class 87 and a USSR built 07 which are a quite rare on long distance passenger trains. The highlight will be the use of the 03 class 4-8-2 which is under restoration. Other locos will be the 01 and 16.
We will be not putting dates on this until we can be assured the restoration of the 03 class locomotive will be completed. Again this tour should be at an attractive price.

INDIA
We have trying to get a programme together using the N class Garratt for some time. However with a few exceptions the IR are currently not running steam hauled passenger trains following the fatal incident near Delhi in 2007. We are pursuing an alternative option of line siding a freight hauled by the Garratt using coaches.

GERMANY - RHEINLAND PFALZ PLANDAMPF - EASTER 2010
Following the success of the Plandampf events held in Rheinland Pfalz in 2000, 2002 and 2005, a major event is being planned for Easter 2010 by the Lander of Rheinland Pfalz, together with DB and other organisations. It will commemorate 175 years of German Railways (1835-2010) and 20 years of Plandampf events in Germany, and will be marketed as "Dampf Spektakel" and will be based on Trier. The advance publicity gives the dates as 1st to 7th April with the core events between 2nd and 6th. The move from the autumn to Easter may assist some members with holiday arrangements, but hotel accommodation over the Easter period is likely to be a major problem! Up to 100 steam hauled trains are likely to operate over the lines from Trier to Koblenz, Gerolstein, Saarbrucken and Luxembourg etc.
Bookings for part of the event will be acceptable.
ACT NOW IF YOU WANT TO BE SURE OF ACCOMMODATION and send a £50 deposit and SAE, stating if a single room is required. (JOHN CRAMP)
