Old Warden Steam Rally (September 14th - 16th, 2018)

This is one of a series of pages I have uploaded to illustrate facets of the steam rallies we have attended in the UK. Click here for the 2018 introduction and overall index.

We had been to Old Warden in 2013/14/16/17 and were a little hesitant to revisit but were tempted by the prospect of dry and hopefully fine weather. Friday had rather more cloud than expected but Saturday turned up trumps and a large crowd turned out and created a great atmosphere (we travelled home on a largely cloudy Sunday). For novelty, the rally depended largely on the presence of four New Zealand engines which had been shipped to the UK for the Great Dorset Steam Fair 50th celebration. Otherwise, there were signs of cut backs after a largely cold and damp 2017 rally. The working area was very quiet with just three working steam engines (two on saw benches, one on a stone crusher) and no steam ploughing. There was neither Steam Yachts nor Steam Gallopers in attendance and fewer stage shows, no Saunders Collective, no Scarborough Fair entertainers and no Sheep Show.

David Collidge's Steam Scenes website ( is a fount of information and was a great help in compiling these pages.
