Selected Penang Walks - Tropical Fruit Farm to Pantai Aceh
This is part of a series of pages on walking the hills of Penang.
This is a Grade 2 walk. There is a sketch map at the bottom showing the route followed.
Please visit my Penang buses page for information on accessing the starting point.
We repeated this walk in January 2015, November 2015 and November 2016 without the side trips, the route remains exactly as before.
Take the 501 bus from Teluk Bahang to the point shown above which is 400 metres above the Tropical Fruit Farm. Go down the path behind Yuehong, we have never seen this gate closed.
The 4 wheel road finishes, ahead is a private house, but take the motorbike track to the left. Go down into the durian estate, shown here a little overgrown as it was out of season.
Keep going down, passing a small shrine and continue, since the second picture was taken much clearance has occurred higher up the hill..
You'll cross a wooden bridge and pass just below a house.
There's a last glimpse of the coconut plantation and you plunge into mature rubber.
Best of all, there are absolutely no junctions over which to fret, it should be pure relaxation under the canopy. There's one small rise and finally the path will open out with a durian estate in front of you, the trespass notice is difficult to read as it was upside down...
Ahead lies another wooden bridge and house. The only possible occupant wasn't dressed to welcome a lady when we visited but he knew exactly what we wanted, even if we seemed to have forgotten our bicycles. There may be dogs loose here especially if he is not at home but a waved stick will do the necessary as always.
He's very friendly and will tell you to follow the path to the left up the hill.
You need the ridge on the left before the orchard finishes. At the worst there will short grass to walk through, perhaps you will spot the pile of logs which will tell you that you are in the right place..
About 5-10 minutes up from the house you will come to another motorcycle trail running left to right. Turn left (right is a dead end) and follow the path past this abandoned house.
There are still some house plants here and very soon you'll be at the ridge.
From here it's downhill all the way, it's mainly durians, you'll pass the remains of a house and go next to an area which has been cleared and replanted.
You'll pass another hut and a bird's nest factory broadcasting twittering noises to attract customers. If you come back up this path then be sure to keep to the right and below the factory.
There are more junctions and just across the small valley is another trail but there's no need to use it..
Ahead you'll find a lockable gate, we've never seen it shut but it would be easy to get round. From here you are on the last section to Pantai Aceh. Note the junction below if you are walking in the opposite direction.
As you exit the Jalan Kampung and go straight ahead past this landmark, Dewan JKKK.
You'll come out just beyond the school and temple, on the right is a shop with a post box outside it.
If you get your timing right, you'll have some time for refreshment in the coffee shop opposite the temple. The 404 buses to Sungai Pinang and Balik Pulau run at roughly two hourly intervals (click here for the latest timetable information), in any case the people in the coffee shop will know when the next one is due.
