Overseas Steam in New Zealand

The Midland Rail Heritage Trust at Springfield (http://www.midlandrailheritage.co.nz/main.html ) is reported (17th March 2010) to have bought two ex-RR 14A Garratts (presumably 520/523, from BCL, Selebi Phikwe, Botswana. This is an embryonic scheme and it will be a while before anything moves.

The Main Line Steam Trust at Parnell, Auckland has had three ex SAR steam locomotives on site for some time. At the end of December 2007, they were joined by two further steam locomotives 14A 509 and SAR 19D 2695 which saw out their active African days in Zimbabwe. There are pictures of them (including the one below by Rob Martin) in the Trust's September 2009 newsletter and it seems (2nd September 2009) that 509 may now steam before the year's end. Thanks to Trevor Heath for all this.

Trevor also advises me (20th May 2009) that the two ex-RR 14As left at Selebi Phikwe in Botswana have been sold to a consortium here which will restore them for potential main line use, similarly 15A 398 which has been stored at Beaconsfield Depot, Kimberley, South Africa has been sold to Steam Incorporated, http://www.steaminc.org.nz/.
